Mr Andy Langdown – A Cyclist Re-Built. The Surgeon’s Tale

The Cycling Addiction Series

Talk No 1 - A Cyclist Rebuilt - The Surgeon's Tale - Mr Andy Langdown - 16th January 2025

Mr Andy Langdown - Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon - spent a lifetime scaling two peaks - eminent hip-surgeon, with unique insight into cycling biomechanics. And, multiple age-group time-trial National Championships as a cyclist.

Then, on Dec 23rd 2021 - whilst cycling home from an all-day operating list, he was hit by a car. Andrew spent Christmas 2021 on ITU at the hospital he works at, with a traumatic brain injury, 3 vertebral fractures and a cheekbone fracture. Andrew's survival was helped by one of his surgical colleagues passing the scene of the accident, and providing life-saving treatment.

Andy's elite fitness, stubbornness and competitive spirit have fueled his recovery. But what now? What has changed? What insights have been learned?

"After 3 years of pushing, I am beginning to accept that the accident has caused permanent change to my life. The new challenge will be what Andy v2.0 wants to achieve and will he be able to do it"

Mr Langdown v2.0

Mr Langdown is always a welcome visitor to Cyclefit. Andy is a natural teacher with a generous desire to both propagate his knowledge, and naturally slot into a multi-disciplinary team. Sometimes he is joined by our wonderful mutual friend and colleague, Dominic Dentry - Team GB and INEOS physio. These moments of collaboration are truly precious, for all of us, but most especially the injured athlete we are jointly working with.

Mr Langdown's evening can range far and wide, as well as providing a natural bridge from The Midlife Cyclist to the Cycling Addiction (which Andrew has code-named Obsessive Cycling Disorder)
Themes may include:

  • “The hip is king, the foot is prince, and the knee is the servant” The foundational role of the hip in cycling bio-mechanics. And what can go wrong? A Consultant's perspective
  • The Midlife Champion Mindset – training, racing, motivation?
  • Trauma. Recovery. Champion. The link between physical, mental and emotional restoration
  • The v2.0 horizon

Julian couldn't have been kinder or more supportive, he took time to find out what I wanted from my cycling and then looked closely at my physical structure to ensure that the bike is a comfortable fit for me. It really is a 5 star service and far exceeded my expectations."
